First Timers

Every climber starts somewhere and we’re proud to have helped thousands of people start their climbing journey. Every participant at Summit must fill in a waiver form and complete a safety induction on their first visit to the centre. Bookings are not required for groups less than 10 people. Our experienced instructors will show you how to operate all the equipment in the centre and make sure you’re comfortable with how everything works. Please note inductions run every half hour during busy times.

Indoor rock climbing can be done a few different ways at Summit and with a variety of specialised equipment. All climbers must wear enclosed shoes while climbing. Climbing shoes will make it a lot easier to climb and can be hired when you arrived.

• Bouldering 
  • Shorter climbs that are protected by a crash pad to catch falls. Boulders are completed individually and typically focus on the strength and problem solving aspects of the sport.
  • Climbing shoes are highly recommended for bouldering.
• Top Roping 
  • The most common form of indoor roped climbing, ropes are set up permanently and anchored to the floor for ease of use. Climbers require a belayer* to operate the rope for them.
  • Both climber and belayer will need to bring their own or hire a harness
• Lead Climbing 
  • A more advanced style where climbers clip into anchors on the wall at progressive stages to protect themselves.
  • Climbers and belayers with prior experience must be assessed for competency on their first visit if they would like to lead climb.
  • Lead climbers must provide all of their own equipment

*belayers are the person at the bottom pulling through the rope for a climber and operating the safety equipment. Belayers must be over the age of 12 and complete a safety induction
